What Is Virtual Memory
Virtual memory is memory obtained from the hard disk when your computer has insufficient RAM. Virtual memory is used when the minimum RAM requirement of you operating system is too high or when the application is using so much memory. Computers use RAM or random access memory for most applications because it is faster than the hard disk and can be used for rapid storage and retrieval of information.
Systems with virtual memory also make use of RAM more efficiently than systems that don’t have virtual memory. This is done by redefining the address space with contiguous virtual memory address and trick computer programs that they are using normal physical memory RAM. Operating systems with virtual memory use some of the pre-allocated hard disk space and make it seem like the computer application is using RAM. The operating system uses algorithms to figure out which addresses are used less frequently and keeps them in the virtual memory. This provides more memory when RAM is insufficient and reduces the chances of frequent access to these memory addresses.
Without virtual memory, once your RAM is full you would not be able to start any more applications. You would have to close another application in order to load a new one. With virtual memory the computer can look for sections in the RAM that haven’t been used recently and copy them on the hard disk to free up space in the RAM to load a new application. The copying occurs automatically without the user realizing it, so even with a small number of megabytes of RAM it would feel like your computer has much more. It is also a lot cheaper to use virtual memory and taking advantage of the less expensive hard drive space to store RAM images than buying more RAM. Also, for those currently using 32 bit Operating Systems, you can only use up to 3 Gigabytes of RAM, even if you have 4 Gigabytes worth of it. The page file is the part of the hard drive where the RAM images are kept. The operating system moves information back and forth between the page file and the RAM.
